SBA's Freight Market Update: August 20, 2026

This week’s freight market reflects continued geopolitical and trade uncertainty, shifting trade routes and new investment in capacity and efficiency across the supply chain.

Current Critical Industry Trends

Canada and the U.S. are moving closer to a trade agreement that could avert proposed 50% U.S. tariffs on some Canadian imports. The emerging agreement could provide greater certainty for cross-border trade, although key terms remain under negotiation.

The UAE has suspended all trade, commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Iran until further notice following escalating regional attacks. The move adds another layer of disruption to Gulf trade as regional tensions continue to affect maritime traffic and commercial relationships.

Ocean

Ocean carriers are raising Panama Canal surcharges as tighter draft restrictions reduce vessel cargo capacity. Further draft reductions are expected in the coming weeks.

China announces new Arctic container corridor to Europe following successful test runs. The seasonal route offers an alternative to traditional Asia-Europe corridors with the potential for significantly shorter transit times.

Ports

The Louisiana International Terminal received a federal permit to begin construction, clearing a major hurdle for the new deepwater container facility. The project is expected to add significant container capacity on the Gulf Coast and accommodate larger vessels.

International

Ford plans to shift production of some Lincoln models from China to the U.S. starting in 2030 to avoid steep import tariffs. The move could boost U.S. manufacturing and domestic logistics demand.

Japan’s economy grew 1.1% in Q2 despite higher energy and shipping costs linked to the Iran conflict. Rising import costs are adding pressure to the resource-dependent economy as Japan seeks alternative energy supplies.

Trucking

Canadian trucking employment rose 4% even as the overall pool of job seekers declined. The trend points to a tightening labor market for carriers as demand for experienced workers continues to grow.

Rail

The Surface Transportation Board has formally begun its review of the proposed Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern merger. Under the current schedule, a final decision could extend into the second half of 2027.

An upcoming Arizona facility, Logistics Park Phoenix (LPP), is set to open in early 2027 to support economic growth and supply chain investment for intermodal services in the region.

Air

A new freighter service between Hong Kong and Navi Mumbai is operating three times a week, adding dedicated cargo capacity between two major Asian markets.

Technology

Menzies Aviation is piloting AI-powered technology that automatically measures cargo as it moves through the warehouse. The system is designed to reduce manual input and measurement errors while improving downstream cargo planning.

Other

CN is testing three hybrid locomotives following a pilot that improved fuel efficiency by 50%. The program is designed to reduce emissions while extending locomotive life and improving operational performance.
